I'm curious what you guys think. I've read others speculating we could get 2 first round picks in trade for Mario. Is that realistic? Seems fanciful to me, but boy if we could get that or something close....

Nice post John, good to have you back in the mix.

I've been most impressed with Watt. I always thought Barwin was special but who would have thought a rookie DT would look so good, especially this late in the year. No "rookie wall" for Mr. Watt!

Is Antonio Smith's lack of quantifiable production a result of Mario being gone or his shoulder injury? or both?

He just doesnt seem as disruptive as I saw him in the beginning of the season...and there seems to be a lack of interior penetration from him

On the flip side of that coin--

I think the O-line, tight ends, and receivers crapped the bed. I understand that the playcalling was intentionally conservative as Kubiak did not want Owen taking snaps from center to finish out the game, but Jags were constantly in the backfield.
I didn't see many cutback lines opening, on the Foster fumble, Dre got blown up (hell he may have caused the fumble himself), OD was whiffing on his guy all day, and I hold Wade Smith personally responsible for Matt Leinart's broken collarbone.
I hope (lay in bed and pray) that Yates can loosen up that box just a little because we won't see anything but 8 and 9 man fronts until he does.

I thought Yates looked pretty good too. Maybe better than Leinart. However I think it's unrealistic to think a kid with only 5 games experience could go into the playoffs and win against defenses fielded by the Steelers, Ravens or Patriots...or even the Bengals. He doesn't have anywhere near the experience necessary to play against that caliber of coaching and talent.

If the season ended today...let's see if I have this right. Balt, Pitt and NE and Hou are all at 8-3. We have a better conference record than any of them. Balt would have a tie breaker over us by virtue of beating us earlier, so we would be the 2nd seed I think. Wild cards would be Pitt and Cincy, and they'd play Oak and NE in the first round (this is where I get fuzzy)? We'd end up playing the winner of one of those games, most likely either Pitt or NE.

There's no way I'd bet on Yates playing well against a Belichick or LeBeau defense. Even at home and with favorable officiating. Like we'd ever have that.

Speaking of officiating...did you SEE how bad it was yesterday? It was flippin' scandalous! I was dumbstruck, speechless.

I am still thoroughly furious with Foster. He played a crappy game, fumbled twice. On repeated possessions in the 4th he was given the ball on 1st and 2nd down and couldn't get more than a yard. And then, on the next to last possession and after 2 futile "efforts" resulted in 1 yard advance, he was laughing in the huddle.

Laughing! He's fumbled twice, dropped passes, can't make a yard with the game on the line and he's laughing! I'd have grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and benched his ass. I can only hope Tate and Ward both were injured, sick, crazy or were suffering from temporary bouts of venereal disease.

What was needed was a dose of bulldozer Ben. A guy that still thinks he has something to prove rather than someone that thinks he's already arrived and it's OK if he fumbles, stumbles, drops and the team loses.

We've had an enormously successful year no matter what happens the rest of the season. All we have to do is hold everything intact for next year and I don't see why we can't do that. Nobody is going to offer Wade a HC job and he wouldn't go anywhere else to be a DC at this point. And Kubiak has had another year of learning what it takes to be a real head coach in the NFL. We'll be fine.

Sorry for the rant.

Had the Texans decided to kick it to the backup fullback all game and had Demps cut it inside on his runback, 38-6 might have been dead-on!

I heard a guy on the radio this week comparing Foster to Earl Campbell. Sorry, but Foster is not in any way like Campbell, not in style of running or body type. Tate's style is a lot more like Campbell's but Tate is no Earl either. Silly stuff.

I'm very disappointed in Vickers. If you re-watched the Jax game you might have seen him miss his assignment on several plays as I did. Hopefully he'll get better as he matures in the system. But I do expect to see him play quite a bit this week so Casey gets more time to heal.

Dreessen and OD should get a lot of looks today, as well as Arian out of the backfield. If we can manage to avoid getting boneheaded on the sideline, and keep hold of the rock, and if the D comes to play today, then I expect something like...

Texans 24, Browns 9.

I have 2 concerns from the first half. They are Schaub's poor throws and our offensive brain trust's inability to make some - ANY - adjustment to cope with other teams loading the box against us.

The problem of us being unable to move the ball against teams running a 3-4 defense (Ravens, Oakland) that load the box against us seems to me to be something you could solve with scheme. And if our inability to do that is the result of AJ being out then it's STILL the coach's fault for not getting and developing a back up for AJ.

I don't know what's wrong with Schaub's arm. I've never seen so many rotten throws from him. Hopefully the bye will get him healed up a bit.

I'm sorry about your grandpa John.

Sometimes it seems as though I'm surrounded by death at my age. But the most vivid experience of it I have is when my sister died. I was in the USMC. She was 13 when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. She was almost exactly 10 years younger than me, and died 2 years after diagnosis at 15 years of age.

To this very day I have a hole in me where she used to be. I was in the house with her when she died and even though we knew it was coming it was like being flattened by a train.

At the least, at 87 your grandpa had a long life. We're born, we live, we die.

It looks like I have no more than a couple years left. Heart disease is killing me. My heart is a patchwork of Dacron. I've gotten used to the idea but I doubt my family has. I hope the people I leave behind will not grieve for long because compared to some I have had a long life, and though I've certainly made many mistakes I had a fair shot.

And remember John, your granddad is going to meet his Father. He's not gone, he's just taking the path we all must take. You'll see him later bud.
